How to//Reading list

Using todays latest technology and gadgets you can record and list books that you are currently reading or want to read. Their are apps and programmes that allow you to do this. It is a more convenient way of creating a reading list for some people. The idea of being able to change it whenever you wish and it to be there to look out may make people more aware of what and how much they are reading.

How to/Reading list

1.Buy a journal, notebook or electronic assistant and use it for your list.
2. Join the public library, even if you go there just to browse.
3. Subscribe to book-review magazines or newsletters. Scan them for books and authors that interest you.
4. Read the best-seller lists to gain even more suggestions.
5. Investigate award-winning authors and books. Prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the **** Prize signify worthy literary accomplishments.
6. Read up on favorite topics and peruse the books' bibliographies (usually found in nonfiction works), adding titles to your list.
7. Discover your favorite authors and note their other works.
8. Join a book group and get referrals from other readers.
9. Audit or take a class at the local college or adult education program, or visit an Internet chat room or newsgroup. All can offer good pointers to worthwhile reading.

Logos

As the leaflet is linked with the existing programme 'Frozen Planet' on BBC ONE, the logos would need to be incorporated into the leaflet. Therefore by finding the originals they can then be traced and different colours can be applied to fit in with the theme. Therefore the outline of the logos will communicate the well known channel but it will have its on effect on it that will aesthetically work well with the leaflet and won't look out of place.

As the 'Frozen Planet' programme is already existing programme, their is already advertisement for the programme. The bottom image is very effective because it shows a photograph that is very relevant to the topic. Also the typography on the top image shows a bold, strong font that uses very straight line which creates a stylish typeface that is legible.

There are many ways to create a leaflet or booklet through the art of folding. If it holds a lot of information, it is often better if a simpler design is used so it dosen't over complicate the whole thing. The idea of how something carries on through, from the front of the leaflet to the back is also effective and the design of when the design is fully open it display a continuous page of information, photographs and imagery, rather than it all being broken up.

Above are selection of fonts that communicate the idea of science and the 'Frozen Planet' programme shown on BBC one. The science related fonts are quite hard hitting and bold. Whereas the 'ice' font are very literal and match what the letters are spelling out. However, they are still bold and stand out.

Alphabet Soup//Workshop Illustrator

'Extracted' Typefaces

For the Illustrator brief, an alphabet needs to be produced communicating one of the ten letterforms communicating the word 'Extract'. Here is some existing typefaces focusing on this.

http://www.vectordiary.com/tips-and-tricks/broken-glass-effect/

This idea of each letter being broken and therefore 'Extracted' has a really strong impact. The harsh, straight lins gives a sense of anger, boldness and almost danger. Something like this would be an effective design for really getting across an idea simple but with impact.

'Urban Jungle'
http://www.dafont.com

This effect of the bottom part of the letter being 'Extracted' works really well as it is still legible but really bold. What works particularly well is that the top half of the letters are quite strong and compact, then as the letter goes down, it gets more and more eroded.

'Fine Stencil'
http://www.dafont.com

Here, it is quite the opposite as the previous typeface. In contrast, instead of a bold, strong outline, this letterform consists of thinner more rounded lines. Also in terms of communicating the idea of 'Extract', each letter is just simply pulled a part a little bit. Therefore this design isn't overcomplicated but equally conveys the concept of 'Extraction'.
'Stencil Gothic'
http://www.dafont.com

This alphabet above is quite similar to the previous one but has a much bolder, stencil like body to it.

Above shows a very 3-D effect applied to letterforms. Because of this, some of the 'Extracted' parts really stand out from the purple background, therefore creating higher impact.

Existing Leaflets

http://www.moultonschool.co.uk/

Many science related leaflets or flyers are full of too much written information and overload the reader. To get an audience to pick up a leaflet regarding something quite full on, it needs to be more simple and straight to the point. More imagery should be used and not vast amounts of small paragraphs of text. However, on the other hand if it needs to consist of certain information that it quite intense then depending on who it is aimed at maybe imagery or brief key words can be used and highlighted.

http://hepl.stanford.edu/cosmic_reflection.html

On the other hand, with the correct layout, imagery, type and colourways a leaflet that needs to display lots of information can still do so if these factors are taken into consideration. However when trying to grab people's attention regarding science, imagery and photographs relating to the subject is pretty important as it adds a bit of excitement and relevance to the aesthetics of the piece of communication.

Study Task 3// Modernism and Postmodernism

A piece of Modernism Graphic Design

Early Design of London Underground map (1927), Originally designed by
F H Stingemore

London Underground map, Harry Beck
The design of the London Underground map shows distinctive modernist design. Internationalism is a key feature that this piece of design portrays. The idea that it is showing a language of design that could be understood on a material and international basis. For example the key and colour coding is there to make the communication and message very clear and legible.

i-D Magazine, Terry Jones

i-D Magaizne is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, art and youth culture. The magazine was founded in 1980 by Terry Jones, who designed this particular cover. The aesthetics of this issue portrays Post-Modernism because of the chaotic colours and complexity and legibility of type. Also the use of the photography and new materials suggests Post-Modernism design. The cover has a rebellious feel to it which again conveys a Post-Modernist feature.
