Old Knitting adverts and book covers
It is interesting to see how knitting was once advertised as a craft. Fashion magazines like vogue created this sophisticated and womanly association with the hobby. It was strictly targeted at women as it was seen as clothes making.
The covers mainly communicated what kind of clothes could be make and how to go about making them. It was more about a necessity as it was cheaper to buy wool to make a jacket rather than buying a pre-made one. Vogue made knitting look glamorous rather than a chore. The woman on the covers were role models and others wanted to look like them and wear the clothes that they wore. Vogue made this possible.
Using knitting for anything other than clothing was not even thought about. This element of the craft has started to change overtime and modern companies have explored this.
