Study Task 5-Lecture Programme Review


Find five Graphic Designers that, in your opinion, produce work that in some way relates to each of the following themes, taken from the level 4 lecture programme-
Modernism
Postmodernism
Graffiti / Street Art
Film Theory
High Culture / Low Culture
A History of Type
Media Specificity
Advertising
Communication
You must find five Graphic Designers for each of the above themes, making a list of 45 Graphic Designers in total.

Write an explanation of why you think each designers work relates to the lecture theme and also include examples of their work and links to online research / articles about the designer.

3. Jamie Reid 


Jamie Reid is a British artist who influenced the 'Punk rock' style. His work expressed the use of collage, cut out type and controversial imagery. Reid's most famous work was the Sex Pistols album cover, 'Anarchy in the UK'.

A Italian graphic designer and graffiti writer.
He started to paint in '97, after a few years, his passion for lettering led him to study the type and graphic design in Milan, where he currently lives and works. He enjoys exploring and experimenting with geometric shapes and typography.

Inkie is a London based painter and street artist, originally from Clifton, Bristol. He is cited as being part of Bristol's graffiti heritage, along with Banksy3D and Nick Walker.

4. Indie184 

Indie184, born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, is a graffiti artist and graphic designer hailing from Washington Heights, New York City. Growing up all over NYC she began to participate in the graffiti culture in 2001. Determined to express herself to the world through art, she quit business college to teach herself how to sew, paint and produce graphic design.

"I started out painting pretty classic graffiti styles back in 1989. since then, my style has developed more and more into the direction of graphical 3d graffiti. there was the fascination, there was the next big thing, kind of a graffiti style revolution to be taking part in, and so i did."




4. Film Theory

1.Saul Bass

(1920 - 1996) was a graphic designer, but is best known for his design on motion picture title sequences, which is thought of as the best such work ever seen. During his 40-year career he worked for some of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, including most notably Alfred Hitchcock, plus Otto Preminger, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. His most famous title sequence is probably the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm. Saul Bass designed the 6th AT&T Bell System logo, that at one point achieved a 93 percent recognition rate in the United States. He also designed the AT&T "globe" logo for AT&T after the break up of the Bell System.



2. Olly Moss 
Olly Moss is an English Graphic designer, based in California who produces iconic film posters. The design style is quite similar to Saul Bass and experiments with negative space and bold colours.

3. Michael C. Place 

Michael C. Place was born in North Yorkshire, England in 1969. He graduated from Newcastle College in 1990. He then went on to work at Bite It!, London with Trevor Jackson working on mainly record covers for  
Champion Records, Gee Street Records for artists such as The Stereo MC’s .



4. Neil Kellerhouse

'A poster should sum up what it is you want to message, sell or communicate about your film. Not in 24 frames, not 30 seconds, but one frame.'





5. John Osborne 

Even though John Osborne is still a student designer and completing his third year, the minimalist redesigned film posters are really eye-catching. The pastel and simple aesthetics work really well.
