Seminar 1//Psychoanalysis

The Century Of The Self One Happiness Machines 
-Controlling crowds.
-Edward Bernay using Freud's theory based on psychoanalysis.
-Originally Freud's ideas hated by Viennese society.
-Behaviours in the war acted the way Freud had predicted. 
-Bernay's was emplyed to advertise working at war.
-Propaganda for war; Propaganda for peace.
-Propaganda became a negative word.
-Barnay's gave Freud a box of cigars in return for a book on the introduction of psychoanalysis.
-Tried to persuade women to smoke, to break the taboo. 
-Cigarettes symbol of penis therefore symbolises 
power.
-Encourage women to smoke to represent the power that they had. Challenging the male power. 
-Torch represents freedom, Statue of Liberty.


  

-Made women smoking socially acceptable by a public action.
-Completely irrational but made them feel independent.
-Selling products with an emotion and feeling.
-Products sold to masses based on needs.
-Mans desires overshadows needs.
-Ended up with things that were wnated rather than needed.
-1920's, banks changed the type of customers they wanted to attract.
-Selling cars as a male sexual symbol
