originally, Propaganda had a negative outlook as it was developed by the German's at wat. Bernay's was convinced that he could turn Propaganda into a positive way of advertising and encouraging mass groups.
2. Encouraging women to smoke
Breaking the taboo of women smoking was irrational but also gave women a sense of independent The perception of women smoking began to develop sexual connotations.
3. The symbolism of freedom
Torches were the symbol of freedom and independence A prime example of this is the Statue of liberty.
4. The mind of the crowds
One of Bernay's skills was controlling mass groups and doing it well. It was easier to direct a group rather than an individual.
5. Effect of advertising
linking a product with a feeling or and emotion to create better promoting and therefore selling.
6. Freud's ideas
To get Freud out of bankruptcy, Bernay's published his theories creating controversy.
7. Consumerism
The change in democracy changed the citizen to consumer.
8.Desire
People were becoming convinced that things they wanted were actually in fact things they needed.
9. Challenging the male power
A cigarette held the symbol of a penis and therefore power.
10. Control of government
Elections, propaganda, manipulation and popularity.
2. Relate these points to an image from mass media which, particular, focusses on the nature of consumerism, desire and unconsciousness.
